Care Partner of the Month: Sherita Biggs
“I love to bring light into people’s lives.”
Written by Jordyn Hack. Jordyn is completing her internship at Renewal Memory Partners as a first-year MSW student at the Loyola School of Social Work.
Caring for others is something Sherita holds very close to her heart. As one of 11 siblings born and raised in Chicago, Sherita channeled her caring nature early on towards helping care for her brother and father. By supporting her family, she realized that caring was her calling in life. “I have always been a natural caregiver, it is second nature for me,” she explains.
Since joining Renewal Memory Partners is October 2019, Sherita has dedicated her time to treating each of her clients like family. “Renewal Memory Partners stood out to me because of their work with dementia care. I knew it was going to be challenging, but I was up for the challenge.” From just one conversation with Sherita, it is clear that she is driven by her desire to “bring light into people’s lives.”
When Sherita is not laughing while trying to guess the answers to Family Feud with her clients, you can find her singing to classical, jazz and R&B, acting as an extra now and then on Chicago’s own television show, Chicago Fire, or working on writing her very own book titled “Born in the Wrong Era.” Sherita is incredibly talented and creative and carries this positive energy into her work with clients.
Sherita is most inspired by determination and self-love. “Every day when I get up, there are always going to be obstacles that get thrown at me, but what inspires me most is remembering that I will not let any of that break me down,” she says. She also works hard at practicing self-love, mentioning that “I inspire myself every day.” She emulates this by giving back to young girls and her own children, as well as her clients—mentoring them daily on practicing self-love.
When asked to share advice for other Care Partners, Sherita emphasized the importance of patience. “When you come into this field, you have to remember to be patient with your clients and take your personal emotions out of the situation and to understand that your clients never mean any harm,” Sherita explains. She also spoke to the importance of having a supportive and collaborative team.
Sherita is committed to the care she provides to her clients, and is regarded by her colleagues to be compassionate, respectful, and hard-working.
Thank you, Sherita, for your dedication to your work, and for bringing light into so many lives.
